Armistice Day – 11 November

11 November is a National Holiday in France. It is called the Armistice Day.

Armistice day is celebrated in France in memory. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning – the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”

Basically, this day is the end of World War 1. This day, at 11 o clock, there will be a moment of silence for 2 minutes to remember those who fell during the world. An estimate of 8 million people was killed in World War 1.

National Doughnut Day!

I cannot believe we have reserved a day in the year to celebrate donuts!

Yes, today is National Doughnut Day in the US. Here are some details from Wiki.

National Doughnut Day is on the first Friday of June each year. The holiday celebrates the doughnut, an edible, ring-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened.

National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fund raiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. They wanted to help the needy during the Great Depression and also wanted to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies” of WWI, who served doughnuts to soldiers on the front lines.

Enjoy your doughnuts today my friends!

14 million dollar Car License Plate

Yes it is a true story. It is just an Aluminium plate (no diamond, no gold) with the number 1 on it.

UAE held an auction for “vanity car plates” to raise funds for a hospital. Saeed Khouri, a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family (Obviously), won the bid for this exclusive number ‘1’ plate for 14 million dollars.

He said: “I bought it because it’s the best number,” said Khouri, whose family made its fortune in real estate. “I bought it because I want to be the best in the world.” Source

So I guess the value of this plate goes way beyond the sheet of metal. 14 million dollar for an identity – the rich guy with the Number 1 plate, etc. Seriously, this really throw my sense of proportion out of balance. Maybe 14 million dollars really does not mean much in UAE?

Rarely you will have your licence plate costing more than most, if not all, cars in the world. I wonder how does it feel when a car bump you from behind? Or receive a call:”Your car plate is being kidnapped! Pay me millions of $$$”

Interesting plate! Interesting people!

Transgender Toilets

CNN Morning Express with Robin Meade today had a report on a group of law-makers discussing on a law regarding Transgender Toilets. This got my attention quite a bit. So, if we have a transgender, which toilet does he/she goto? Are the toilets today discrimination against (transgender) sex?

Looking from the perspective of a transgender, he/she should be given the choice of which toilet he/she can use, depending on whether he/she feels manly or womanly at that time? Hmm… Interesting.

Looking from another perspective, will it be offensive to the non-transgenders to have transgender with the opposite body parts to be using the same toilet, eg. a transgender with male body parts using a female toilet?

When more cities, states, countries have started to accept Transgenders, the society certainly are doing something to the toilet law. Interesting! I certainly look forward to see how this law will go.

16 January – National Nothing Day

Yes. I could not believe it myself. Today, Americans celebrate National Nothing Day.

Created by a newspaperman Harold Pullman Coffin in 1973, his goal for creating this day is “to provide Americans with one national day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing, or honoring anything.”

From the way Mr. Harold puts it, it seems like there are really a lot of days that Americans do celebrate. And yes, he is right. Here is a calander from a Medical & Dental Center in Callifornia. Of course, not all the days stated in the calender is celebrated nationwide, but there are quite some cool days, like National Fun at Work Day & National Relaxation Day.

Will this ever save anyone’s Life?
