Virtual vs. Real

An interesting news today: a lady is filing for a real life divorce after discovering her husband has an affair in Second Life virtual world.

“It may have started on-line but it existed entirely in the real world and it hurts just as much,” she said. “His was the ultimate betrayal. He had been lying to me.”

Many people indulge in Computer games, because it takes them away from reality, and allow them to live in their fantasy world, where they are allowed to be powerful wizards, warlords, football player, football manager, or even just to live a human life without the constraints or expectations of the real world.

But today we are seeing people spending so much time or so emotionally involved in the virtual world such that the virtual world has invaded the real world. We are creating another world of our own, where the rules are different, and importing these rules into the real world.

1) GTA – People bringing the game to Real Life. Robbing cars, killing people

2) WOW – People’s life invaded by the powerful character they own so much so that they feel powerless and useless in Real Life.

3) Second Life – People filing divorce and sending virtual spies into Virtual world

So what is real? Reminds me of Matrix part one. Are we spending too much time in the virtual world? What if the real world isnt a pleasant place to live in for some? But what if Virtual World can provide these people with lasting happiness? Is that possible? If yes, what will happen to the real world? Should we live in the Matrix?

Conventional Logic vs Religious Logic

Of coz this comic is biased against the Religious people. Nevertheless, the “Conventional Logic” group cannot prove the “Religion does not exist” notion either eh?

Anyway, I quite like this comment below:

It assumes that sight is the ultimate reality. Even all the senses put together is a mere perception (portion) of the real. Conventional logic can only go so far based on what information is given to it.

Free IPhones for University Students!

The future for learning? or A Marketing Strategy from University & or Apple?

For some reason, the ladies in the picture below, whom are holding the Free iPhones & iPods doesnt seem very happy or excited? More homework sent to iPhone?

(source) for freshmen attending Abilene Christian University this fall, a free iPhone or iPod Touch will be given to them as part of their learning experience.

The university has developed 15 web applications for these two media devices to help students receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, get directions to their professors’ offices, and check their meal and account balances among other things.

I wonder whether would that have any effect on their school fees? And of course, this cool gadget could be extremely distracting.

That aside, this could spell very interesting posibilities for software/applications development for the students, if they can collaborate with Apple to create specific aplications for the students/university’s specific needs.

A win-win situtation for Apple and the students and the university?

Graffiti in Pasar Seni LRT Station

I have recently visited Kuala Lumpur and some of the graffiti on the walls got very interesting. In fact, in my opinion, (forgetting the fact that this might be illegal) some of them are pretty well done. Also, I am not sure, maybe there could be some hidden meaning behind the graffiti? Maybe the ‘artist’ is trying to communicate a message to the masses?

Garbage Island is DOUBLE the size of TEXAS!

So what is Garbage Island?

A heap of trash that’s twice the size of Texas is floating somewhere between San Francisco and Hawaii. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, as it’s called, is 80 percent plastic, and weighs in at 3.5 million tons. Trapped in a circular course by winds and currents, it’s been around since the 1950s, and has been growing tenfold every decade.

Exposure to these garbage can cause serious implications to our health….

I just watched a report from CNN documenting about The Garbage Island, where the host Thomas Morton took a trip to the Garbage Island from Callifornia. Below is a video of the documentation. The first part of the video tell us how the Island is formed, and how it affects us, to have these “plastics” and the “chemicals” in our waters.

I have spent about 5 months in Texas, and Texas is BIG! It is the 2nd largest state in the USA. The amount of garbage that we are producing is really enormous! Hopefully this will give us second thoughts when using plastics in the future. Save ourselves!!!

Here is the official website of Thomas’s trip. Please forgive his (vulgar) language. But the message is clear.

Environmentally Friendly BOMB!

To make safer, more environmentally friendly explosives, scientists in Germany turned to a recently explored class of materials called tetrazoles. These derive most of their explosive energy from nitrogen instead of carbon as TNT and others do… (source)

Here is a video of an experiment of this new “Environmentally Friendly BOMB”.

Lets say that again – “Environmentally Friendly” + “BOMB”

This could well be the oxymoron of the year.

I wonder what drove this group of scientists to develop this kinda bomb, but it did give me a good laugh when I read about the article. Who in the right mind considers the environment, when he/she decides to bomb and destroy people/home/country? I just cannot see how does destruction of people/home/country somehow equate to Environmentally Friendliiness.

Try imagining environmentalist protesting against the use of traditional bombs in the event that this Environmentally Friendly Bomb is commercialized and coutries go to war. This could well happen some day in the future!
