Gong Xi Fa Cai – Happy 2008

“The Story behind the Scenery” will like to wish all readers – Happy Chinese New Year.

This year is the year of the Rat! For those who believe in Feng Shui, here are some tips for the year ahead for you!

Special attentio for those born in the year of the horse, beware! Fan Tai Shui!!! Things are going to be tough this year! I know of 3 people born in the year of horse who were involved with 5 minor accidents in the past 5 days.

Besides Feng Shui, Chinese New Year is primaraly a time for family gathering. This year, I witnessed something very special during my reunion dinner. My cousin whom married a British man, joined us for reunion dinner together with her husband. This particular scene really caught me: My grandfather (only speaks Chinese and Malay) learning English from us, and my British friend (only speaks English) learning Chinese from us. And the scene of both of them trying to communicate to each other in their newly learned (broken) phrases is simply beautiful.

It is just amazing watching 2 people, from 2 different cultures, 2 different generations, trying to break down the language barrier, to learn more about each other and to appreciate each others presence during this special time of the year in the Chinese Calender.

Anyway, that was one of my special moments for this year’s Chinese New Year. I wish you all a Prosperous Chinese New Year, and keep coming back here for more stories behind the scenery! 😉
